  • Bring with you in Summer

When the sun is shining and the weather is clear, hiking the Vesuvius crater is an unforgettable experience. To ensure you have a comfortable and safe climb, here is what we recommend bringing:

    1. Appropriate Footwear

Even on a sunny day, the terrain is composed of loose volcanic gravel and uneven rocks.

Essential: Wear sturdy sneakers with good grip or hiking boots.

Avoid: Flip-flops, sandals, or high heels, as they are not permitted for safety reasons.

    2. Sun Protection

The trail is almost entirely exposed with very little shade.

Sunscreen: Apply high SPF protection before starting the ascent.

Hat & Sunglasses: A cap and polarized sunglasses will help protect you from the intense Mediterranean sun.

    3. Hydration and Snacks

The hike can be physically demanding, especially in the heat.

Water:Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person.

Light Snacks: Energy bars or fruit are great for a quick boost at the summit.

    4. Clothing

Light Layers:While it may be hot at the base, it can be breezy and cooler at the crater (approx. 1,000 meters above sea level). A lightweight, breathable t-shirt is ideal.

Small Backpack: To keep your hands free during the walk.

Pro Tip: Don't forget your camera or smartphone! On clear days, the view over the Bay of Naples, Sorrento, and the islands of Ischia and Procida is absolutely breathtaking.

  • Bring with you in Winter

Visiting Vesuvius in winter offers a stark, dramatic landscape, but the conditions at the summit can be significantly harsher than at sea level. The crater stands at approximately 1,281 meters, meaning temperatures are much lower and winds are stronger than in Ercolano or Naples.

To enjoy your tour comfortably, we recommend the following:

    1. Layered Clothing (The "Onion" Strategy)

Temperatures can drop rapidly as you ascend.

Thermal Layer: Wear a breathable base layer to keep your body heat in.

Insulation: A warm fleece or wool sweater is essential.

Outer Shell: A windproof and waterproof jacket (like a parka or technical shell) is highly recommended, as the wind at the crater can be biting.

    2. Footwear and Accessories

The trail can become slippery or damp during the winter months.

Boots: Sturdy hiking boots with deep tread are best. Avoid smooth-soled shoes.

Gloves and Beanies: Protecting your extremities is key; a warm hat and a pair of gloves will make the 20-minute walk to the rim much more pleasant.

Scarf: To protect your face from the cold gusts at the summit.

    3. Essential Gear

Small Backpack: To store layers as you warm up during the hike.

Water and Warm Snacks: While you might not feel as thirsty as in summer, staying hydrated is vital. High-energy snacks like chocolate or nuts are great for keeping your energy up.

Portable Power Bank: Cold temperatures can drain smartphone batteries much faster—ensure you have enough charge for your photos and digital tickets!
